Trusted Air Valves Single and Double

Air valves are mechanical devices used to control the flow and release of air in various systems. Air Valve is a type of valve designed to automatically release trapped air or admit air or Excess air into pressurized pipelines, tanks or fluid systems. They play a crucial role in maintaining / ensuring Pressure balancing and smooth operation in preventing air-related problems such as air pockets, vacuum formation, and pressure surges and ensuring the efficient operation of pipelines, tanks, and pneumatic systems.

Air valves are widely used in water supply networks, irrigation systems, wastewater pipelines, and industrial fluid transport systems.

Air valves are typically made from:

  • Brass: Durable and corrosion-resistant.
  • Stainless Steel: Ideal for high-pressure or corrosive environments.
  • Plastic (PVC/ABS): Lightweight and cost-effective for low-pressure systems.

Purpose of Air Valves

Excess air in a pipe can cause slower flow, pipe churning damage, cause turbulence, and increased corrosion rate.

  • Air valves allow excess air to escape from the pipeline while containing pipeline fluids within the pipeline during the normal operation. They also allow air to escape from the pipes during filling.
  • The valves can inject air into the pipes while they are being emptied, preventing a vacuum, which would cause the pipe to collapse.
  • To minimize energy losses and improve flow efficiency.

To protect pipelines and equipment from damage due to water beat and pressure surges.

Working Principle

Air valves operate based on pressure differences between the inside of the pipeline and the atmosphere:

  1. When air accumulates in the system, it rises to the highest points.
  2. The valve’s float mechanism senses the presence of air and opens the orifice to release it.
  3. Once air is expelled and liquid enters the valve, the float rises and closes the orifice to prevent leakage.
  4. During vacuum conditions, the valve allows atmospheric air to enter, balancing the pressure.

Types of Air Valves

         1. Air Release Valve

    • Continuously releases small amounts of trapped air during pipeline operation.
    • Equipped with a small orifice for precise venting.
    • This type of valve employs a light weighted float that senses the presence of air. A mechanism linked to the float opens the valve orifice and releases the air.
    • These types of valves work best when the water pipe is at full pressure, as it has a limited ability to release and inject air.

          2. Air/Vacuum Valve

    • Releases large volumes of air during pipeline filling.
    • Admits air during draining or when vacuum conditions occur.
    • Air and vacuum valves, also called large orifice valves, injectors release air in large quantities while the pipeline is being filled or emptied.
    • These valves are also sealed by a ball. As the water fills the pipe, the ball stays below the hole and the valve is sealed. When the pipe is being emptied, the ball falls with the water level and allows air to enter the pipe

         3. Combination Air Valve

    • Thecombination air valves are nothing but combined air and vacuum valves.
    • Provides continuous small air release and large air intake/exhaust when required.
    • The automatic air release function releases accumulated air from the system while it gets pressurized.
    • The air and vacuum function discharges take-in large volumes of air in the course of filling or draining pipelines.
    • The combination air valve will open to relieve negative pressures whenever water column separation occurs.

         4. Kinetic Air release valve

    • It evacuates air during pipe filling. Allows large volume air intake in case of the pipe drainage network.
    • The kinetic air valve provides excellent protection against vacuum formation with its advanced aerodynamics design and kinetic orifice.

Applications

  • Water Supply Pipelines– To remove air pockets and maintain efficiency.
  • Irrigation Systems– To protect pumps and pipes from vacuum collapse.
  • Wastewater / sewage Systems– To release gases and prevent blockages.
  • Industrial Fluid Systems– To maintain smooth liquid flow in chemical, oil, and process industries.
  • Hydropower & Pumping Stations– To avoid surges and protect turbines/pumps.
  • Saltwater (reverse osmosis plants)
  • Acids in solution (mining).
  • Potable water lines
  • HVAC Systems: Control air distribution and pressure

Advantages

  • Prevents pipeline damage due to vacuum or pressure surges or water hammer.
  • Improves pumping / system efficiency by eliminating air locks.
  • Enhances system reliability and lifespan.
  • Automatic operation with minimal / reduced maintenance cost.
  • Available in corrosion-resistant materials (cast iron, stainless steel, ductile iron, composite plastics).
  • Enhanced safety and reliability
  • Prevention of water hammer and vacuum damage

Limitations

  • Requires installation at strategic high pointsof pipelines for effectiveness.
  • Improper sizing may cause water leakage or insufficient air release.
  • Sensitive to debris or solids (special designs needed for wastewater).
  • Regular inspection is needed to ensure float and orifice are not clogged.
  • Lack of air damage pipelines is a consequence of negative pressures or depression.
  • The collapse is due to transient pressures or water hammers.
  • And also by the suction of mud, chemicals injected into the system and dirt in the connections, suction of seals, gaskets, and other internal parts may lead to Corrosion and Cavitation problems.
  • The impedance of the flow in pipes or reduction of the effective section. It results in an increase in energy losses. Also the inadequate supply of water to the different areas of the system due to the obstruction of the flow and the accumulation of localized head losses.
  • Inaccurate readings on gauges and hydrometers.
  • Serious damage to internal rotating parts of gauges.
  • Inadequate water supply due to incorrect meter and hydrometer readings.

Conclusion:

Air Valves are essential pipeline accessories that maintain system efficiency and protect infrastructure by automatically controlling air and vacuum conditions. By releasing trapped air and admitting air when needed, they ensure safe, reliable, and energy-efficient operation of fluid transport systems.
